Course Descriptions:
- Zine Making with Zoe Uhr
In this class, we’ll explore Hilo through kilo (close observation), personal storytelling, and the art of zine making. A zine (short for magazine) is a small, handmade booklet — simple to create and completely your own.
Using everyday materials, students will learn to see ordinary things — chickens, pigeons, palm trees, rain — in new ways. Through storytelling exercises and creative exploration, we’ll discover more about the town around us, then transform those discoveries into handmade zines. Each student will leave with at least one personal zine capturing their own vision of Hilo, along with the confidence to keep creating. No prior art experience required — just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
- Junk Journals with Mary Milelzcik
Students will each create a fun personalized interactive junk journal. Participants are encouraged to stretch their imaginations by creating layered effects, such as pockets, tabs, windows, see-through pages, pop-out and fold-out pages. Journals will be personalized by adding thoughts, stickers, drawings, tiny collages, photos and paintings. We will provide art supplies, recycled materials, dried leaves and small pressed flowers, handmade papers, magazine and book pictures, feathers, wrappers, recycled paper, stickers. Keiki are encouraged to bring additional items from home to add to content.
- Stickery Studio with Renata Ballo
Students will learn to design and create their own stickers, symbols, characters, mini illustrations, and graphics. They will utilize playful experimentation with drawing, color, composition, and visual storytelling. They will transform sketches and ideas into finished sticker art that can be used to personalize water bottles, notebooks, journals, laptops, sketchbooks, and other creative projects and gifts. The workshop will also introduce some foundational design concepts in a fun and approachable way.
