Pinwheel Power! Kalākaua Park 2022 || Youth Art Month
East Hawai‘i Cultural Center and Hawai‘i Science and Technology Museum
East Hawai‘i Cultural Center’s Youth Arts Series (YAS), in partnership with Hawai‘i Science and Technology Museum (HSTM), presents our annual Youth Art Month project in Kalākaua Park. This community-generated kinetic art installation (made almost entirely from recycled materials) celebrates and highlights the importance of arts education for youth.
The paper pinwheels hung along the Kalākaua Park walkway were created by dozens of keiki from the community. Over the last few months, keiki and teens have decorated pinwheels at our various partner locations (‘Imiloa Astronomy Center and the Hilo Public Library) and schools, as well as through events at EHCC such as our free art on the lanai activities, YAS², held every Saturday in February.
After School All Stars and Hawai‘i Science and Technology Museum helped to assemble windmills made from recycled plastic water bottles, which are installed on the beams above the walkway.
The last component along the sides of the pond are wind-spinners created by the Youth Arts Series, Jerry Moulton and the Hilo High School Art Club. Each is made from a variety of recycled materials including ramen bowls, cardboard boxes and an upcycled fan.
Pinwheel Power! aims to highlight the importance of art as a vehicle for connection and collaboration within the community, to illustrate the impact of art to uplift an area, and also to reduce the impact of our creative work on the environment.
The installation will remain on view to the community throughout Youth Art Month (March).
