The Youth Arts Series Summer Art Camp 2021

Program Description

The Youth Arts Series (YAS) annual Summer Art Camp is back! Keiki will join our talented local artists for creative adventures. In this year's summer session, the YAS team of skilled instructors will guide young artists through the process of learning a variety of mediums. Our student artists will create their own works of art while learning basic technical skills behind each medium. They will also learn the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

Week 2 of Summer Art Camp will feature the theme of collaboration. Students will be encouraged to think creatively, communicate their ideas, and collaborate safely on projects with their peers throughout the week.

YAS will be rolling out more summer classes in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Course Descriptions

Connecting With The `Āina Through Papermaking with Mary Milelzcik

This Papermaking workshop focuses on creative ways to connect with the `Āina through art. Students will learn an easy way to recycle old paper and plant materials into artisanal sheets with deckle edges, suitable for writing and art, including painting and printmaking. Students will learn from traditional and experimental methods to create paper sheets and artwork using nature, found objects, and by recycling/upcycling. These are fun activities that students can share with their `ohana.

The Print Possible Printmaking Class with Kawelina Cruz

Anything is possible with printmaking! In this printmaking class, students will be able to discover their creative outlet through the use of printmaking and mixed media materials. They will explore the different types of mark-making and learn how to expressively utilize color.

Assemblage Art with Jennifer Ko - Week 1

This class will focus on using both found and new materials to create assemblage art.  Students will learn to create wind chimes using driftwood, clay, yarn, sea shells and other materials. The workshop will allow students to express themselves creatively while learning hands on methods to construct their visualized pieces.

Installation Art with Jennifer Ko - Week 2

This class will be a collaborative group project. Students will learn to work both independently and as a group to design and construct a series of installation art pieces. Using chicken wire, fabric and lighting, students will work together to create visually engaging pieces that are both expressive and personal.
