EHCC: Who we are today and how we reimagine tomorrow...

Dear Friends of EHCC,

This Tuesday, May 5th, we are asking you to show you support diverse cultural expression in our community by giving a donation to the East Hawai'i Cultural Center through the Give Big Hawai'i campaign. You can find our campaign profile here.

Over the years, EHCC has presented an extraordinary range of visual and performing arts. Our gallery showcases artists who provoke new ways of viewing the world. We have celebrated LGBTQ, native Hawaiian, African-American and women’s art.

Our theatre plays hosts to local drama groups, visiting musicians from around the world, mixed-media performers, and many more. Our Youth Arts Series and Young at Art programs encourage and educate young people to love and create art. And our Javanese gamelan program offers unique musical experiences.

As we shelter in place, we’re finding new ways to reach out. We’ve just introduced video offerings and initiated an on-line community photo exhibition that we hope you will be part of. We’re planning on-line Youth Arts Series classes with an eye to affordability as the crisis causes economic struggles for so many of us.

Before the pandemic changed all of our lives, EHCC’s revenue came largely from facility usage fees, workshops, and gallery sales. Now nearly all our funding sources have dried up, but our operating expenses remain.

Fortunately, our dedicated volunteers, who have always been at the heart of everything we’ve accomplished, also remain. We are committed to finding new ways that EHCC can serve East Hawai'i residents, because we know that art and cultural expressions will be fundamental to restoring our collective well-being in the difficult months ahead. Please join us in this effort by going to our profile and donating today.
