EHCC Lecture Series Online presents: Monuments and Memories of the Portuguese in Asia with Larry Butler

Monday, October 3rd 2022, 6PM (HST)

Here in Hawaiʻi we are well  aware that the Portuguese form an important part of our population, descendents of the sugar plantation workers recruited from the Portuguese Azores and Madeira.  We remember that Brazil was Portuguese for more than 300 years, and that its language is still spoken there.  Less familiar parts of the former Portuguese global empire include African nations and significant trading and military outposts in Asia.  In this Zoom lecture, art historian Dr Larry Butler will explore some of his favorite cities of Asia with significant monuments and memories of the Portuguese empire: Goa in India, Malacca in Malaysia, Macau in China, and Nagasaki in Japan.

Free to both EHCC members and non-members. RSVP to [email protected] to receive the zoom link.
