Orchid Isle Orchestra celebrates the “Colors of the Season” in an evening concert on Monday, December 18, 7 P.M. at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in Hilo.

Included in the musical canvas are brushstrokes from the classical, romantic, jazz, modern and holiday genres -- arrangements of Haydn Symphony No. 86 Finale; Fandango Asturiano from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, Op. 34; Polka from Dvorak’s Czech Suite; Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue; The Pink Panther by Henry Mancini; Yakama Variants by Richard Meyer; The Christmas Song, O Hanukkah, and the Ukrainian Carol of the Bells woven in with Greensleeves in an arrangement by Larry Clark.

Adding to OIO’s palette are Waiakea High School percussionists Keira Ida lyu, Arzel Bautista, and Tabitha Snader. They play bells, triangle, cymbal, castanets, and on a drumset in several of the orchestra arrangements.

OIO Artistic Director Cathy Young and students from the Young Music Studio open the concert with hues from the classical and fiddling traditions. Maestro David MacKenzie invites the audience to sing along with familiar holiday music for the concert’s finishing touches.

Orchid Isle Orchestra is a community orchestra, teaming young string players with those who are young at heart, in its 17th year performing in East Hawaii. Concert admission is free. All donations are welcome and will benefit OIO, OIO’s non-profit fiscal agent, East Hawaii Cultural Center, and string music education in East Hawaii.
