11th Annual Hilo Lei Day Festival
Celebrate Lei Day at HMOCA by making a Lei Aloha Nui with Sue Champeny. Learn how to make lei using recycled materials, silk flowers, ribbon and yearn and fresh flowers! Randy Lee will demonstrate making the traditional Hawaiian lei. Opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. will introduce the festival's Lei Day Queen, Kahokukauahiahionalani Fo and her Lady in Waiting Thailana Aipolani. Hawaiian puppetry, Hawaiian music and hula by Iwalani "Aunty Bea" Masoe and her 'ohana. Displays and food booths. The free event runs until 3 p.m.
The Holoku Ball and reception for "He Mo'olelo ko ka Lei - A Story of the Lei" art show begins at 5:30 p.m. Titled "Ua Malamalama, this exhibit runs through May 27 at the Museum. Organized by Leilehua Yuen.
